Why Your Story Isn’t Landing And What to Do Instead

Most high-performing leaders don’t have a marketing problem. They have an identity lag problem.

It’s the quiet friction that happens when your business has evolved, but your story is still wearing the suit you bought three years ago.

Your work is better. Your leadership is stronger. Just the way you describe your value hasn’t caught up.

So your marketing feels accurate, but maybe not so true anymore.

You’re winning on paper but quietly questioning how you show up in the world. You’ve grown, stretched, and matured as a leader… but maybe your story is still speaking from an earlier version of yourself.

And that gap shows.

Story isn’t soft. It’s structural.

Your brand story isn’t your About page or a catchy tagline.

Your story is your organising principle. It shapes how you communicate, how you make decisions, how you lead, and how you grow.

When your story is misaligned, you pay a performance tax. You spend extra energy over-explaining in sales calls, justifying your rates, and correcting misalignment internally.

But when your story is clear, it becomes a strategic asset. It filters your decisions, attracts the right clients. And most importantly, it gives you the audacity to stop over-explaining your worth.

Story isn’t fluff in our books. It’s the foundation everything else stands on.

The three houses of truth

Every strong story rests on three pillars:

1. Identity: What’s the audacious truth of who you are now? Not who you were when you started, but the leader you’ve become and the brand you now stand behind.

2. Resonance: Why does that truth matter to the people you’re here to serve?

3. Expression: How does that truth show up in your website, your systems, and your leadership?

The part most businesses skip?

They jump straight to expression — the website, the content, the visuals — before doing the deeper work of identity.

They try to paint the house before reinforcing the rebar. But when the foundation isn’t solid, everything on top feels a little wobbly.

Why your story might be drifting

Here are a few patterns I see again and again:

The Narrative Lag:

You’re leading from where you were, not where you are.

The Audacious Fix:

Your growth doesn’t need an apology. Really, it doesn’t. Rebuild your story from your current authority.

The Expertise Trap:

You’re speaking from your credentials instead of your clients reality.

The Audacious Fix:

Lead with empathy for their Identity Lag, not just your solutions.

The Echo Chamber:

You sound like everyone else because you’re playing it safe.

The Audacious Fix:

Name your point of view. Actually, just have a point of view. It’s critical. Even quiet audacity is more memorable than loud genericism

What changes when the story clicks

When a story finally aligns, the energy in a business shifts.

Identity lag dissolves.
Momentum returns.
Conversations feel easier.
Decisions feel clearer.

The right story doesn’t just sound better, it feels truer. And when something feels authentic and real, the right people lean in.
